Thirty years ago — 1991

The New York & Lake Erie Railroad in Gowanda announced that it has acquired nine specially equipped boxcars that will be used to ship canned evaporated milk from the Carnation Company’s South Dayton plant. The shipments will go to various distribution centers across the country.

Forty years ago — 1981

New paneling and furniture recently installed in Dunkirk Mayor Gary Michalak’s office in city hall was the subject of some criticism from Councilman Florian “Tup” Wlodarek when the common council held a special meeting with the mayor. The issue came up when hot words were flying about Michalak’s defense of laying off Department of Development Finance Manager Edward Adamczak. “If you’re so concerned about economics,” Mr. Wlodarek asked, “how much did you spend on remodeling your office?”

Fifty years ago — 1971

Miss Christa Babirad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stefan Babirad of Middle Road, Dunkirk has been named to the dean’s list at Concordia College, Bronx, NY, for the fall semester. She is majoring in teacher education.
