Thirty years ago — 1991

A “Do You Remember?” photo shows Roof’s Restaurant on Main Street in Silver Creek as it looked back in 1951 when it was a favorite eating establishment for many area residents. Roof’s was known for its large glazed donuts which were as big as a dinner plate, and large “butterfly” and sticky nut rolls, all baked daily. The restaurant was owned and operated by the Roof family.

Forty years ago — 1981

Hanover Town Justice Burt Valvo will resign April 1, he announced in a letter to the Hanover Town Board. Justice Valvo, in his letter, said he has served as town justice for nearly 10 years and now feels it’s time “for another to take over that burden.” A Forestville attorney, he resides on Old Main Road in Silver Creek. The town board unanimously appointed Hanover Police Chief John Kohler of Silver Creek to complete Valvo’s term which expires Dec. 31.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Students at St. Mary’s School in Dunkirk will present the musical “Muang Thai” this weekend. Lead roles in the production, which is based on “The King and I,” will be played by Patricia Hanley, Ellen Ludwiszewski, Chris Poland and Richard Yorke.
