Thirty years ago — 1991

At a joint state legislative hearing regarding the proposed closing of the Gowanda Psychiatric Center, an AFSCME International official cited the elimination of the Gowanda facility as an “unconscionable attempt to balance the budget on the backs of the employees and over the bodies of the patients.” About 400 persons attended the five-hour hearing held on the GPC campus.

Forty years ago — 1981

Robert J. Mackowiak, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Mackowiak of 983 Central Ave., Dunkirk is the Student of the Week at Dunkirk High School. A senior, Bob is ranked second in his class. He has been a member of numerous clubs, including National Honor Society, Computer Club (president), Student Council and High School Bowl. He is photo editor of the yearbook and has been on the DHS swim team for four years. His future plans include attending college to pursue a career in science and math.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Unemployment in Chautauqua County continued to worsen during the past month, reaching a record eight percent. This was the highest rate since February 1964.
