Thirty years ago — 1991

Joy M. Babcock, daughter of the Revs. Ken and Naomi Babcock of Clymer, formerly of Sheridan, is a state finalist in the Miss New York State National Teen-Ager Pageant to be held May 24-26 in Albany. Joy, 15, is a student at Sherman Central School.

Forty years ago — 1981

After 32 years of service, Maurice C. Marz has retired as a rural route carrier for the Sinclairville Post Office. He began his career on a rural mail route that covered 47 miles and delivered mail to 135 rural route boxholders. At present, his route covers 74 miles with deliveries to 385 boxholders. Mr. Marz reminisced that his first day on the job coincided with Valentine’s Day and he had a number of families on the route with the same last name so was fearful of delivering the wrong Valentine to the wrong youngster. He was given a safe driving award for having driven over a half-million miles without an accident.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Linda Pawlowski, a second-year nursing student at Gowanda State Hospital School of Nursing, has been named “Miss Hope” for Chautauqua County. She resides at 215 King St., Dunkirk.
