Thirty years ago — 1991

A law requiring all cats to be immunized against rabies will, in all likelihood, go into effect in Chautauqua County sometime this summer. This is the word from the county health officials in Mayville, who say that if just one case of raccoon rabies is detected in the county, state law requires that all cats in the county over three months of age be immunized. Rabies in raccoons has recently extended into New York’s southern tier.

Forty years ago — 1981

The First United Church, the oldest church in Silver Creek, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The Presbyterian church, organized in 1831, is planning special programs and services throughout the year to commemorate its anniversary. The church building itself, a grand white edifice, was built 140 years ago. The church is not only the oldest house of worship in the town of Hanover, but is one of the oldest churches in Chautauqua County.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Cathy Johnson, Wayne Campaign and Greg Magavero will represent Forestville High School on this week’s “It’s Academic” competition on WBEN-TV. Teams from Grover Cleveland and Bishop Ryan high schools will compete against the local students.
