Thirty years ago — 1991

The honorary degree which was to have been awarded to Lucille Ball in May of 1989 will be awarded posthumously this May after approval was granted by the State University of New York Board of Trustees. The Jamestown-born actress would have received SUNY’s honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at Jamestown Community College’s commencement ceremony on May 20, 1989. She died April 26, 1989. Lucille Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, will accept the honorary degree on her mother’s behalf at this year’s commencement, set for May 18. Miss Arnaz will be paying her first ever visit to Jamestown to take part in the community’s Lucille Ball Festival of NewComedy from May 23 to May 26.

Forty years ago — 1981

The Rev. John Rough, pastor of the Park United Methodist Church in Sinclairville and the Gerry United Methodist Church, has been named “Man of the Year” in Sinclairville. He received a plaque from retiring Sinclairville Mayor C. Ronald Vahl.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Mrs. William Crocoll and Mrs. Robert Meyers are co-chairmen of the Dunkirk Jayncees fashion show. All proceeds will benefit the Miss Dunkirk-Fredonia scholarship program.
