Thirty years ago — 1991

The Brocton-Portland Business Association hosted a community dinner for over 100 people to honor operators of Owen’s Country Store, which closed in February after serving Brocton for 65 years. The honorees included Al Kawski, Marge Owen and Judy Owen Kawski. Mrs. Owen and her late husband Robert operated Owen’s Drug Store for 55 years. Mr. and Mrs. Kawski continued the business as Owen’s Country Store for the next 10 years.

Forty years ago — 1981

Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Mackowiak of Pine Drive, Fredonia have returned from a two-week vacation to Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. While there, Mrs. Mackowiak celebrated her birthday and visited with her cousin, Mike Arnone, formerly of Jamestown and now a member of the hit group, “The Favorites,” which was performing at a hotel in Oahu.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The Barmore brothers, Verland and Dean, have opened a new tire and wheel service center in Cassadaga. The store will be known as Gay Mark.
