Thirty years ago — 1991

Citing her inability to reach an agreement with County Executive Andrew Goodell on the county office building and the downturn in the nation’s economy, Rochester developer Karen Hanson has pulled out of the city of Dunkirk’s harborfront development project. Her company, Chadwick Bay Plaza Inc., had planned to build a 54-unit condominium building and 60,000 square feet of office space.

Forty years ago — 1981

When the space shuttle Columbia lifted off the launch pad earlier this month, it was being powered by solid fuel, big booster rockets, the technology and engineering for which were first developed in the early 1960s by Excelco Developments of Silver Creek. Excelco was the first engineering and development firm in the United States to build large diameter solid propellant rockets, according to A.J. Newman, chairman of the board of Excelco and Newbrook Industries in Silver Creek.

Fifty years ago — 1971

New York City’s long-delayed plunge into Off-Track Betting began today. Ten betting windows were opened in Grand Central Station and shortly thereafter another six windows were opened in Queens.
