Thirty years ago — 1991

Student of the Week is Darren Best, son of Peter and Carol Best of Westfield. A senior at Westfield Academy and Central School, Darren is majoring in math, science and French. He has lettered in baseball, basketball and football. Darren plans to pursue a career in accounting.

Forty years ago — 1981

Chautauqua Hall of the Masonic Temple in Dunkirk was the setting for a testimonial dinner-dance honoring Paul V. Reber, an active Mason since May 16, 1938. The 200 persons attending the event applauded Mr. Reber for his tireless efforts on behalf of Masonry including the Brotherhood Fund Drive and the “Think Big” and “Build” programs — each drive surpassing its 100 percent quota.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Ralston-Purina has announced plans to build a multi-million dollar pet food plant in the East Town of Dunkirk. The decision was made after several months of negotiations among city, town and Purina officials. The new plant, said to be the largest ever for the Purina operation, will employ about 150 persons.
