J & M Bakery is now open at Plaza 59 on Route 60, Dunkirk. Owners Mike and John McNiff specialize in cakes for all occasions plus a wide variety of breads, rolls, pastries, coffee cakes, doughnuts and other baked goods. They welcome special orders and commercial baking requests.

Forty years ago — 1981

The county bridge on Risley Street has officially been renamed the Reinhoudt Bridge. A plaque on the bridge was unveiled, honoring the late Chautauqua County Legislator Donald C. Reinhoudt Sr. and his famous son, Donald Jr., who earned the title of “World’s Strongest Man” in 1979 and has broken more than 28 world and national power-lifting records.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Kurt Langer, Suzanne Lindstrom and Dean Goodell represent Silver Creek High School this Saturday on “It’s Academic,” the high school quiz show broadcast on Channel 4, Buffalo. The team’s coach is Norman Bentham.
