Thirty years ago — 1991

Tens of thousands of Hungarians paid tribute to Communist resister Cardinal Josef Mindszenty as his body was laid to rest in his native homeland 16 years after his death. Cardinal Mindszenty visited the Dunkirk high school named after him on May 23, 1974. He died in exile from his native Hungary two years later.

Forty years ago — 1981

The Silver Creek Village Board recently appointed John Yannie chief of police for the village. The newly appointed chief joined the Silver Creek Police Department in 1972 and has served as sergeant since 1978. Chief Yannie, a native of Falconer, replaces Sheldon Machemer, who retired as chief on April 12. Chief Yannie resides on Elm Street in Silver Creek with this wife, Carol and daughter, Kimberly.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Mrs. Gilda Hutchinson has been elected to a five-year term on the Dunkirk Board of Education. She was elected by a margin of 30 votes, defeating Mrs. Helen Banach, 467-437.
