Thirty years ago — 1991

For the first time in 78 years, high school seniors in New York state won’t be competing for Regents Scholarships. The scholarship program is an apparent casualty of the state’s budget problems. The $250 Regents Scholarships have been awarded to high school seniors on merit since 1913. There were 25,000 winners last year.

Forty years ago — 1981

A watermelon seed spitting contest was held recently at the Bells parking lot on Main Street in Westfield. Winners shown included James Dougan, Lynne Johnston, Bernardine Howell, 1981 National Watermelon Queen; Marc Haskin and Lou Dispenza, manager of the Bells store. About 125 children took part in the contest.

Fifty years ago – 1971

Alvin H. Kaymore has been installed as commander of the Charles Tinley Chapter 142, Disabled Veterans of America.
