Thirty years ago — 1991
A new addition to the Lily Dale Volunteer Fire Hall was dedicated recently in a ceremony which included recognition accorded the late Charles “Al” Swift for 35 years of continuous service as a volunteer. Mr. Swift’s widow, Fanny, and Robert Pries, president of the fire department were on hand for the dedication of a brass plaque which dedicates the new room to Mr. Swift.
Forty years ago — 1981
Dunkirk native Dave Graf, now a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has signed a contract with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. Graf was released by the Redskins only last week in their next-to-last cut, but a recurring knee problem by another linebacker necessitated Graf’s return. Graf is a graduate of Dunkirk High School, where he excelled in three sports before attending Penn State. He previously played six seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
Fifty years ago — 1971
Pictured in the OBSERVER are members of the dance staff at the Eloise McMahan Heyl Dance School, 220 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Teachers are: Aurel Ludlum, Nancy Keller and Jeanine Goulding. Training for the Civic Ballet in Jamestown will be offered in addition to ballet, tap and acrobatics.
