Retrospective

Thirty years ago — 1991

Student of the Week is Denice Michelle Kaus, a senior at Fredonia High School. The daughter of Robert and Patricia Kaus, she is a four-year member of the high school orchestra and Spanish Club. This will be her fifth-year of softball and fourth year of volleyball. Outside of school, she has assisted the Cockaigne ski instructors in teaching younger children. She has been skiing since age 4 and hopes to be a ski instructor. A 3-1-3 student enrolled at SUNY Fredonia, Denice hopes to attend the University of Buffalo to study pharmacy and pharmacology.

Forty years ago — 1981

The Erie Savings Bank found itself the proud owner of one used YMCA building when no one else bid on the property as it was auctioned off in the lobby of Dunkirk City Hall. The sale was forced by the bank as it attempted to recover over $200,000, which the defunct operation owed the bank. The “Y” closed its doors in July citing financial difficulties which prevented it from continuing operations.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The Red Barn, 71 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk is advertising a three-day special: a “Big Barney” sandwich, french fries and Coke for 77 cents.
