Thirty years ago — 1991

Norwood and Lois Barris of Dunkirk recently presented the D.R. Barker Library in Fredonia with copies of their four latest books for genealogy research. The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society has published a limited number of the four books for resale in addition to a fifth — Gleanings, a compilation of vital information from court and justice docket records by Virginia W. Barden of Ripley.

Forty years ago — 1981

Helium-filled balloons with messages inside were released by youngsters at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist. In conjunction with the Sunday school and parish theme for the year, “Let Your Light Shine,” balloons carried this message plus the name and address of each Sunday schooler and a note on the outside of the balloon to “look inside.” The Rev. Philip Lord is the pastor.

Fifty years ago — 1971

St. Mary’s School in Dunkirk has elected its student officers for the year. They are: John Ronan, president; Susan Rusch, vice president; Mary Lou Saden, secretary; and Michael Smith, treasurer.
