Thirty years ago — 1991
In a stunning upset, voters in the city of Dunkirk ousted four Democratic incumbents including Mayor Greg Krauza, Councilman at Large Angelo Bennice, First Ward Councilman Donald Brisky and County Legislator James Muscato. One race is still undecided as Third Ward Councilman Mark Speziale Jr., another Democratic incumbent, leads his opponent by just eight votes with absentee ballots yet to be counted. What made the sweep all the more astounding was that four of the five Republican challengers were political neophytes who had never sought office before.
Forty years ago — 1981
Two local students were among the three Fredonia State recipients of the Ruth Tice Callahan Award for Academic Excellence. They are Joel Rizzo, a geology major from Dunkirk with a 4.0 average and Karen Bolling, an accounting major from Silver Creek with a 3.97 average.
Fifty years ago — 1971
Lester A. Graf, chairman of the board of George H. Graf & Co. of Dunkirk, has been re-elected as a member of the board of directors of the New York State Council of Retail Merchants, Inc.
