Thirty years ago — 1991

Cassadaga resident Esther Olmstead is working on a history of the 31 one-room schools that combined to form the Cassadaga Valley Central School District. She asked the board of education for permission to investigate the cornerstone in the original Cassadaga Valley Central High School building. A small sealed box reportedly placed in the cornerstone as part of a ceremony held on Aug. 13, 1939 to dedicate the new centralized school could contain information about these schools.

Forty years ago — 1981

Pet of the Week is “Buffy,” a part-Persian house cat owned by 1-year-old Michael Szach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szach, 25 North Gazelle St., Dunkirk. According to Mrs. Szach, Buffy gets along quite well with Michael, who calls his pet, “Baby”.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Nearly 200 Cassadagans attended a community meeting to talk about the drug problem in the village. Donald J. Muench, senior investigator for the state police bureau of criminal investigation, was the speaker.
