Thirty years ago — 1991
Heidi Sanderson, daughter of Rod and Sally Sanderson of Maple Street, South Dayton and a senior at Pine Valley High School, has been selected as Student of the Week. President of the school’s National Honor Society chapter, she is also the recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Science Award, Penn-York Chemistry Award and was a 1991 state finalist in the Walt Disney “Dreamer and Doer” competition. Heidi was selected the 1991 homecoming queen and is secretary of her senior class. She is a member of the basketball team which won the 1991 Girls Class D State championship. Following graduation, Heidi plans to enroll in a four-year college to study hotel management.
Forty years ago — 1981
Dunkirk Hose Co. No. 1 recently hosted a “christening party” to mark the arrival of its new American LaFrance pumper, which will replace a 1957 Seagraves pumper. Earl Kommer, a life member of Hose 1, served as master of ceremonies. Edward Huels, the company’s oldest surviving member (61 years of service) christened the new pumper. Hose Co. No. 4 will be receiving its new pumper at a later date from the same company.
Fifty years ago — 1971
Despite the inclement weather, the Dunkirk High School Band and marching ensemble made a fine showing in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. Marching through the rain, they were playing “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” when viewed by the large television audience.
