Thirty years ago — 1991

Louis Ziegler of Dunkirk was honored recently by the faculty of Dunkirk High School on the occasion of his retirement as head custodian after 33 years of service. Retirement plans for Mr. Ziegler, who is also a city assessor, include travel and spending more time at the family store, and with his family, which includes five children and four grandchildren.

Forty years ago — 1981

Hearty homemade soups and sandwiches are a specialty with Mike and Sue Matesevac, owners, operators and the host and hostess at The Sandwich Shop on Route 20 in Sheridan. It is located at the site of the former White Star Restaurant, which was operated by the Matesevacs for 33 years. The couple spent the entire summer remodeling the restaurant and opened for business on Oct. 1.

Terry L. Jensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jensen, 73 Elm St., Westfield and a senior at Westfield Academy and Central School, is the Student of the Week.
