Thirty years ago — 1991

Dunkirk Mayor-elect Margaret Wuerstle has announced she will appoint Susan Pupenbroke to the position of city clerk when she takes office on Jan. 1. Ms. Pupenbroke, who served as Ms. Wuerstle’s campaign treasurer, is a sales agent with Midtown Realty and a substitute grade school teacher with the Dunkirk School System. She holds a master’s degree in education from SUNY Fredonia.

Forty years ago — 1981

Andrew J. Hawke, director of pupil personnel services and School 4 principal, announced his retirement at the end of November after 17 years of service to the district. Mr. Hawke stated that failing health forced him to resign, effective Nov. 30. His last check included an additional $15,860.79 in accumulated sick leave. Administrator Robert E. Block and teacher John Dombrowski are sharing the duties of principal at School 4.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The Dunkirk Board of Education has approved the increase of student lunches from 30 to 35 cents and for staff lunches, 60 to 65 cents.
