Thirty years ago — 1992

Petitions and resolutions are being circulated throughout Chautauqua County which will be submitted to the U.S. Postal Service asking that a commemorative stamp be issued in the name of David Bigelow Parker, a Civil War veteran who was born in Ashville and served under President Abraham Lincoln. He served as Chief of Postal Inspectors, initiated the postal money order systems and rural free delivery.

Forty years ago — 1982

Notification has been received from the Professional Tennis Registry in Hilton Head, S.C., that former Dunkirk resident Joseph Rutkowski has been awarded the highest ranking from that organization. Only 10 percent of applicants worldwide reach this level. Currently a social studies teacher and boys’ tennis coach at Lake Shore Central in Angola, Mr. Rutkowski’s teams have compiled a 49-2 record and sent seven representatives to the state high school championships. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Rutkowski of Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1972

The Rev. Marlin B. Stewart of Pleasant Valley has been named pastor of the Westfield Presbyterian Church.
