Thirty years ago — 1992

Kimberly Stankey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Stankey of Eldridge Hill Road, Conewango Valley and a senior at Pine Valley Central School, has been chosen Student of the Week. An outstanding athlete, Kim has won many awards for high school basketball and also played volleyball. She is the recipient of the “I Dare You: Leadership Award” and the Scholar-Athlete Award. Kim plans to major in computer science after graduation.

Forty years ago — 1982

Nothing can be done to stop a planned post-season deer hunt in the northern end of the town of Ripley and the west end of the town of Westfield, a state official said today. The state has an obligation to protect landowners from damage caused by deer, who are feeding on apple and cherry tree buds in the Ripley-Westfield area. A total of 300 permits will be issued for each of the two three-day hunts in a 16-square mile area.

Fifty years ago — 1972

Donald J. McCarthy Jr., a 35-year-old Buffalo native, is expected to be named as the new Dunkirk city attorney at an annual salary of $15,000.
