Thirty years ago — 1992

Dunkirk Mayor Margaret Wuerstle is not ready to say she feels the idea of a regional sewer district stinks — but she does have some strong reservations about the proposal. She is particularly concerned about losing control of how much sewer service would cost city residents. Wuerstle also questioned how it would be possible to keep politics out of the board that would run a regional district. She also needs to be convinced that a large regional sewer district would be able to do the job it was intended to do.

Forty years ago — 1982

Maggie Kuhn, the organizer of the Gray Panthers who was once named one of the 25 most influential women in America, will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters degree at the commencement ceremonies of Fredonia State University College on May 15. Honorary degrees were awarded by the State University of New York for the first time last year. As “national convener” of the Gray Panthers, Kuhn leads a group of 8,000 people who oppose “arbitrary discrimination against people on the basis of chronological age.”

Fifty years ago — 1972

One of the first projects for the new city Department of Parks and Recreation in Dunkirk, formed last month as a branch of the public works department, will be the construction of a new Little League baseball field. It will be built on city-owned land behind School 7 on Lake Shore Drive East.
