Thirty years ago — 1992
Michael G. Szalkowski, son of Mrs. Russell (Freda) Fuller and Norman Szalkowski, both of Dunkirk, graduated April 3 from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park with an associateÌs in occupational studies degree. He majored in baking and pastry arts. Michael, who received an award for scholastic excellence, is working at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia as the assistant pastry chef. He is a 1986 graduate of Dunkirk High School.
Forty years ago — 1982
Student of the Week is Julie Karalus, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Karalus of the Brocton-Stockton Road, Brocton. A senior at Brocton Central School, she is a former class secretary, elementary editor of the 1982 yearbook and a member of the National Honor Society. Julie has been active in Girl Scouts, Future Homemakers of America and school plays and musicals. She will attend JCC in the fall to major in computer science.
Fifty years ago — 1972
Construction of a roadway linking the entrance of the New York State Thruway with the main entrance of Fredonia State University College, is estimated to be four years away, according to an announcement at a meeting of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Regional Planning Board.
