Thirty years ago — 1992

Gowanda Police Chief Richard A. Stitzel plans to retire this month and has submitted a resignation letter to the Gowanda Village Board of Trustees. His last work day will be May 28. Stitzel stated at the meeting that he did not think this time in his 19-year career would come so rapidly and thanked all who had been supportive during his tenure, including former Mayors Donald Lazar and David Schaack.

Forty years ago — 1982

Dunkirk Hose Co. 1 held its annual banquet recently where the guests of honor were members of the Flying Dutchmen Drum Corps., a marching unit founded 50 years ago; Gerald “Jay” Hollander, the only charter member still marching with the group and 50-year company members Stanley Klimek, Clarence Briggs and Arthur Maloney.

Fifty years ago — 1972

John W. Saville II, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Saville, West Main Street, Fredonia is the Student of the Week. He is a senior at Fredonia Central School.
