Thirty years ago — 1992

A movement is growing for a postage stamp honoring a wacky red-head who was big in the ’50s. Lucille Ball deserves a stamp of her own, according to a plurality of respondents to a recent survey. Although two dozen male entertainers have been featured on postage stamps, only one female star — the late Fanny Brice– has ever had a stamp of her own. Asked which woman entertainer most deserved the honor, 45 percent of respondents to the poll picked Miss Ball, who was born in Jamestown and lived in Celoron until she was a teenager.

Forty years ago — 1982

Brett Collins of Westfield is one of six recipients of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers Outstanding Student Awards. A junior at Marietta College in Ohio, Mr. Collins is a 1979 graduate of Westfield Academy and Central School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Nash, 68 Elm St., Westfield.

Fifty years ago — 1972

More public buildings in New York state will have to be designed to be more accessible to physically-handicapped persons under a law that has been signed by Governor Rockefeller.
