Thirty years ago — 1992

There have been no indications that Brown Shoe Co. of St. Louis has changed its plans to close the Moench Tanning Co. by the end of the year. Since the May 28 announcement by Brown Group Inc., which reported a $20.758 million loss in the first quarter of this year, no one from the corporation has asked for any assistance to continue the operation that has been under their control since 1925, according to Gowanda Mayor Leo Polasik.

Forty years ago — 1982

The Viking ship “Hjemkomst” will make its only stop on Lake Erie between Detroit and Buffalo in Dunkirk. With a captain and crew of 12, the ship was built in Minnesota and is heading for Norway. The sailing vessel, which has no auxiliary power, will be towed into the Dunkirk harbor and to the dock by the Sheriff’s department rescue boat.

Fifty years ago — 1972

The Lake Shore Road Runners, a social group for men and women motorcycle enthusiasts, is being organized in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area. Richard Butler of Dunkirk has been elected president.
