Thirty years ago — 1992
The Brocton Volunteer Fire Company recently competed in the annual Southwestern Volunteer Firemen’s Convention parade in Little Valley. Four counties — Alleghany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Erie — were represented. The Brocton Fire Co. marching unit took top honors in the parade by receiving “the grand trophy” for the best overall marching unit. Marching unit chairman Gary Miller said that to the best of his knowledge this is the first time the unit has made top honors since it was started in 1909.
Forty years ago — 1982
A majority of the Dunkirk Common Council is expected to present a county legislative subcommittee with a proposal to build a new county office building in the city’s harborfront area on a site that would be provided by the city. It is proposed that the city make available 64,000 square feet of vacant land on the southeast corner of Lake Shore Drive East and Washington Avenue.
Fifty years ago — 1972
The Dunkirk Board of Education is expected to take action on establishing a lunch program throughout the Dunkirk elementary schools and to establish a position calling for a “districtwide” guidance counselor.
