Thirty years ago — 1992
Student of the Week is Sarah Comerford, a senior at Fredonia High School. The daughter of William and Wendy Comerford of Fredonia, she is president of Key Club, a football cheerleader, an avid golfer and Girls State nominee. Sarah is listed in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” She participates in the SUNY Fredonia 3-1-3 program and plans to continue her education in language and bilingual education.
Forty years ago — 1982
The new prison facility on the grounds of the Gowanda Psychiatric Center is named the Collins Correctional Facility despite the effort of Collins Town Supervisor Rob Gaylord to persuade the Department of Correctional Services to consider the name of Helmuth. The DCS took the town name of Collins in lieu of the village name of Gowanda to avoid confusion with the GPC. The postal address of Helmuth is confusing to most people outside this immediate area so a name was chosen that was more easily found on the map.
Fifty years ago — 1972
Construction is continuing on the new Twin Fair Department Store on Vineyard Drive in Dunkirk as most of the exterior walls have been completed.
