Thirty years ago — 1993

Work is about halfway complete on a comprehensive construction project at St. Joseph’s Church in Fredonia. According to the Rev. James O’Connor, pastor, the construction is expected to be completed by April 2 and was preceded by a three-year fund drive. The 4400 square foot addition will link the rectory, church and parish center, along with providing a new on-level entrance. Also new will be a gathering area for after Masses, a new parish office, two handicapped restrooms, a new sacristy and chapel, and a two-car garage.

Forty years ago — 1983

Student of the Week is Nicholas Smith, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Smith of Van Buren Road, Dunkirk. A senior at Fredonia Central School, he is a National Merit Commended Scholar. He has also participated in varsity football and track. Outside of school, Daniel enjoys sports, hunting and martial arts. Following graduation, he plans to attend Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, majoring in aerospace engineering.

Fifty years ago — 1973

The first dinosaur footprints ever found in New York state have been discovered near Nyack by two college students. The prints are estimated to be 200 million years old.
