Thirty years ago — 1993

Westfield native Brenda Curtis-Heiken was one of six announcers covering the 1993 Inaugural Parade on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C. These announcers were, for the first time, stationed in seven areas along the route on Pennsylvania Avenue.Mrs. Curtis-Heiken has worked in Washington for the past 24 years, doing radio and television reporting. She is the daughter of the later Esther Curtis and a 1962 graduate of Westfield Academy and Central School.

Forty years ago — 1983

Officials at Great Lakes Color Printing Corp. announced today that the company has decided to move its new offset press out of its Dunkirk plant. The press was put into operation last year. In spite of repeated efforts by the OBSERVER today to obtain more information concerning the decision, company officials were unavailable for comment.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Earlie Waller Jr. has been installed as president of the Dunkirk branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
