Thirty years ago — 1993
Rep. Amo Houghton (R-Corning) conducted a town meeting in the council chambers of Dunkirk City Hall. About 60 constituents attended the session. Congressman Houghton discussed and answered questions regarding a variety of topics including the proposed “Atlantic” steamship coming to Dunkirk as a tourist attraction, President Clinton’s economic stimulus package and a proposed national sales tax or value added tax (which he opposes) to pay for the health care system.
Forty years ago — 1983
The Business Club of Fredonia State University College has announced that its 1983 recipient of the Business Person of the Year Award is Richard Stuczynski, owner and operator of the Convenient Food Mart in Fredonia. Mr. Stuczynski opened Convenient Food Mart in September 1978 after working for 25 years for the Peter J. Schmitt organization, parent company of Bells. Convenient has since grown to employ 21 workers.
Fifty years ago — 1973
Ribbon-cutting ceremonies took place this morning to officially open the new Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. office at 31 East Fourth Street in Dunkirk.
