Thirty years ago — 1993

Dr. Estelle M. Crino of Silver Creek, principal of Gowanda Elementary School, is retiring from an educational career spanning more than 42 years in the field of teaching and administration. She began teaching in 1950 as an Allegany Franciscan Sister, teaching in a converted cigar factory in a non-segregated area in Ybor City, Tampa, Fla. Dr. Crino completed a six-year teaching position in the Silver Creek schools and in 1979, was the first woman administrator hired to a principalship at Gowanda Central School.

Forty years ago — 1983

No information has been given from the Buffalo Medical Center concerning the foot that was found off of the Dunkirk Pier on July 25. Chautauqua County Coroner Warren Riles said the medical center is examining the foot to determine, among other things, how old the foot is and how long it was in the water.
