Thirty years ago — 1993

The Dunkirk Common Council has decided to create a new position of juvenile officer within the police department next year. Third Ward councilman Mark Speziale made the suggestion for the $40,000 per year post, stating the city has changed over the years and an officer is needed to work on a full-time basis with the community’s youth.

Forty years ago — 1983

Dawn Warren was crowned the 1983- 84 Dunkirk-Fredonia Junior Miss, beating out 10 other senior girls from Dunkirk and Fredonia who vied for the title. The new Junior Miss was also one of three recipients of the Spirit of Junior Miss award. For her talent, Dawn played the piano composition “Fur Elise” by Beethoven. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Warren of Dunkirk. First runnerup was Eva Marie Forbes. Her parents are Dr. and Mrs. John R. Forbes of Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Thomas J. Piede of Dunkirk was chairman of the “Roarin’ 20s” party held at Dunkirk Elks Lodge 922. Dance music was provided by the Woodcliffe Orchestra and those in attendance dressed in costumes of the era.
