Thirty years ago — 1993

The Big Dipper on Central Avenue, Dunkirk, is getting bigger, according to owner Carmen Oliver. He is in the process of expanding the existing Big Dipper shop by 2,400 square feet before it opens again on April 1 for the spring and summer season. The location has been used for an ice cream parlor for well over 30 years, with Oliver purchasing the business from the Booth family 22 years ago.

Forty years ago — 1983

Dunkirk Mayor Edwin Gregoreski recently welcomed Quality Care Inc., the nation’s largest independent home health care company in the city. Home health care is the second-fastest growing industry, creating jobs for many. Ann Marie Fitzer, staff supervisor, expressed the tremendous need for home care services in the area. Quality Care is located in the Wright Building, 422 Central Ave.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Ronald Piskorski of Van Buren, who recently returned from a two-year stay in Morocco as a Peace Corps worker, spoke on his experiences at the regular meeting of Fredonia Grange No. 1.
