Thirty years ago — 1993
Student of the Week is Stephanie Chiesi, a senior at Ripley Central School. The daughter of Ralph and Marilyn Chiesi of 42 Burton St., Ripley, she is ranked first in her class and was elected president this year of both the senior class and the National Honor Society. Active in sports, she lettered in softball, basketball, soccer and volleyball. This year, Stephanie is poised to become Ripley Central School’s all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball. Following graduation, she plans to attend either SUNY Fredonia or Canisius College.
Forty years ago — 1983
The Lake Shore Savings and Loan Association in Dunkirk, the only locallyowned savings and loan, has set a record for its home mortgage loans this year. The lending institution issued $5 million in mortgages by the end of October. That total exceeds the firm’s previous record by $2 million with two months to go. The present interest rates are between 9.75 percent and 14 percent. Not long ago, rates had been as high as 20 percent.
Fifty years ago — 1973
Laura Stonefoot entertained members of the West Sheridan Community Club at a dinner in her East Main Road home with Leah Hubbard conducting the business session. Members later tied a quilt.
