Thirty years ago — 1994

The National Cheerleaders Association announced that Mirella Del Sorbo, daughter of Sam and Angela Del Sorbo of Irving, has been named as a $1,000 collegiate scholarship recipient. A senior at Silver Creek Central School, she participated in the Jeep-Eagle Aloha Bowl in Hawaii on Christmas Day 1993. Mirella was recently selected for the national All-American Cheerleading Squad.

Forty years ago — 1984

The members of the Dunkirk Chapter of the WNY Softball Hall of Fame, in appreciation for continuing fastpitch softball in Dunkirk, presented the First Annual MVP award during pre-game ceremonies at Promenschenkel Stadium. The 1983 season winner was Steve Lilly, Acquavia Post’s outstanding pitcher who hurled his team to the league championship. He will be honored at the annual All-Star game in August.

Fifty years ago — 1974

Dunkirk Police received a telephone report that a baboon had chased a motorist near Swan and West Second streets. Police were unable to find the motorists– or the baboon.
