Thirty years ago — 1994 Students in Lisa Forbes’ second-grade classroom at School 3 in Dunkirk won the READAmerica Classroom Project and received a computer recently at Midway Park in Maple Springs. Among the students who traveled to Maple Springs with Ms. Forbes were Alexis Carreras, Jeremy Raynor, Jillian Campbell and Jason Luszcak. More than 50 classrooms of students entered the program and pledged to do extra reading through the summer. Thirty years ago—1994 A memorial garden has been dedicated in honor of the late Thomas M. Heary, former principal of Fredonia High School, by the FredoniaHigh School Parent Teacher Student Association. Mr. Heary, who died Jan. 16, 1993, had been principal since 1972. The garden is located at the entrance to the high school, with a brick walkway that leads up to a plaque dedicated in Mr. Heary’s name that reads: “In Memoriam: teacher, counselor, principal, administrator, PTSA life member, adviser, leader, gentleman, friend.” The garden contains various types of trees and ...

Thirty years ago — 1994 As a farewell gesture, students and staff filled the office of retiring Brocton Central School Superintendent Richard Gloss with various colored and signed balloons. As a memento of his years at Brocton, the Brocton School Board presented Mr. Gloss with a deacon’s bench that has graced his office. Thirty years ago — 1994 The Cassadaga Branch Library’s first birthday was celebrated on June 18 in the new building’s air-conditioned comfort. The event, coordinated by the branch library board and members of the Mary E. Seymour Library’s board of trustees, was marked with a birthday cake, a used book sale, displays and demonstrations. Among the nearly 100 guests was Ann Miller, an active participant in the Cassadaga Then & Now series that preceded the birthday celebration. Thirty years ago — 1994 The Dunkirk-Fredonia Center for Peace and Justice awarded first-place certificates for the 1993-94 Peace Essay contest to three high school students. Susie Zirkle from Brocton won an award for an essay on the “Underground Railway.” “Women’s Suffrage,” was the topic of the essay by Suzanne Guziec of Dunkirk and Kristin Osman of Fredonia wrote about Danes who aided World War II Jews. Thirty years ago — 1994 The city of Dunkirk has been notified that it will be awarded a state grant for improvements which it hopes will lead to Amtrak making Dunkirk an official stop for its passenger trains. John C. Egan, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, notified the city by letter that it would be receiving $62,500, which the city hopes to use to refurbish the former depot at the foot of Main Street near the railroad tracks.
