Thirty years ago — 1993 A ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication of a plaque renaming the Harry E. Wheelock Primary School highlighted a recent open house to show off to the public the newly completed addition to the school. A total of 19 new rooms were constructed at the Wheelock School with nearly 80 percent of the project funded by the state. The renaming of the school consisted of just a slight change by adding the word “primary” to the Wheelock School title. She currently serves as president of the Student Council and is an active participant in WDOE Radio’s “High School Highlights.” Stacey participates in volleyball, basketball and swimming and is a member of the yearbook staff and Drama Club. Thirty years ago — 1993 For over 40 years, Cave’s Variety Store in Stockton has been open every day - including Christmas - to provide area residents with a convenient place to shop. Operated since 1952 by Ronald and Helen Cave of Fredonia, the store has become a landmark in the community. Located in the heart of the hamlet of Stockton, this four corner facility offered everything from gasoline, work clothes, boots, hunting equipment and imported beer to home grown veggies, penny candy and the daily newspapers. Thirty years ago — 1993 Dunkirk’s newest industry, Dunkirk International Glass and Ceramics Corp. plans to conduct a variety of high-tech recycling operations, including the recovery of broken television tube glass. Some of the larger pieces of chemically-coated glass will be returned to the television manufacturing companies for re-use as tubes. DIGCC is in the process of purchasing the former Great Lakes Color Printing Co. plant on Stegelske Avenue and hopes to hire 61 people during the first year of operation. Thirty years ago — 1993 More human bones have been uncovered at the Oak Tree Apartments on Route 438 on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. Indian beads were found mixed with the human remains, suggesting an ancient burial ground so old the elders of the community were unaware of its existence. The bones were estimated to be 400 to 500 years old and according to Seneca tradition, “the dead are taken care of and respected so that no spirit will be in conflict with whoever is involved. Kitchen is the newest addition to the staff of Westfield Family Physicians, located at 193 East Main St. Dr. Kitchen recently completed his specialty training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. As with the other doctors in the group, Dr. Kitchen will provide a full spectrum of services and is seeing patients in the Westfield and Sherman offices.
