Thirty years ago — 1993 Up to 17 jobs could be lost in the city of Dunkirk under a plan by Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. to consolidate its eight regional telephone customer service centers into one large facility somewhere in the state. NiMo spokesman Stephen Brady said that a decision on the facility is not expected until next month. And, while Dunkirk is in the running as a possible site, there is no indication that the city is likely to be chosen. Thirty years ago — 1993 Petitions requesting home U.S. Postal delivery for Brocton residents will soon be available at the bank, village clerk’s office, the hardware store and the American Legion. Advantages to home delivery include the convenience of it and the credit card companies and other businesses prefer to deliver to an address rather than to a post office box. Home delivery requires mail to be placed in a mailbox and if there is outgoing mail, the carrier has to pick it up. In addition, any packages have to be delivered to the home. Doyle, who will be honored for his Service to Humanity. Thirty years ago — 1993 The powerlifting team from Darwin’s Health Club won another title at the Greater Buffalo Bench Press competition recently at Maryvale High School. Dave Kyser, Mike O’Hara and Keith Naslund led Darwin’s with first place finishes in their respective weight classes. A state champion, Kyser benched 325 in the master’s category. He set the state record of 340 in last year’s competition. Naslund lifted 440 in the 242-lb. class while O’Hara benched 285 in the teenage 148-lb. weight class. Thirty years ago — 1993 Chautauqua County’s solid waste managers had some good news for local municipalities, businesses, individuals and trash haulers. It was announced that increases in landfill tipping fees scheduled for this month will be postponed until January and when they do go into effect, will be markedly less than previously anticipated. The announcement could mean thousands of dollars in savings for private industry. Thirty years ago — 1993 The Gowanda Business and Professional Women’s Club has named Joan R. Byrne as its 1993 “Woman of the Year.” She was chosen for her volunteer spirit demonstrated most recently by her efforts to start the 50-Plus Senior Program and the inception of the Meals on Wheels Program. She also was the first and only female town justice for the Town of Collins, serving from 1971 to 1985.
