Thirty years ago — 1993 Dunkirk resident Louis Ziegler was recently sworn into office as second vice president of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association during an installation service in Wheatfield. Chester Tarnowski, president of Dunkirk’s Murray Hose Company 4, presented a gift to the outgoing association president, Robert Walker. Thirty years ago — 1993 The Northern Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce has named Petri Baking Products Inc., as its Economic Development of the Year. Founded in 1935, the company has two factories in the northern Chautauqua County area. Its main factory is based in Silver Creek while another operation is in Dunkirk. Thirty years ago — 1993 Pumpkins of all shapes and monstrous sizes are rolling onto Ray Waterman’s farm today for the 11th annual World Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Collins, the goal of which is to produce vegetables that might feel at home in an H.G. Wells novel. The current record holder is an 827-pound pumpkin grown in Washington. About 100 growers will try to break that record today. He will receive his award during the 12th annual chamber award. Mr. Ritenberg was the unanimous choice of the chamber’s regional executive board. Nog is a family-owned and operated business located in Dunkirk which manufactures variegating bases, sauces, flavors, syrups and ice cream bar novelty coatings, selling primarily to the dairy industry. Thirty years ago — 1993 Ann Putnam Miller of Cassadaga celebrated her 95th birthday today and was honored at the Cassadaga Community Building. Born Oct. 1, 1898, she hopes to be able to celebrate her 102nd birthday in the year 2000. This way, she will tell you, she will have lived through three centuries. Mrs. Miller is a member of one of the founding families to settle in the Cassadaga area in 1817 and was raised on a farm located on what is now known as Putnam Road.
