Their visit highlighted the observance of the 20th anniversary of the parish’s present church building along with recognizing October as Polish-American Heritage Month. The Rev. Thirty years ago — 1993 One of America’s most unusual college presidents will give the annual address for the Academic Convocation at SUNY Fredonia. Dr. Leon Botstein, the lively and intellectual president of Bard College, will present the lecture, “Education in the Year 2000.” At age 23, Dr. Botstein became the whiz kid of college presidents when he took the helm at Franconia College in New Hampshire. Thirty years ago — 1993 The first phase of Stefan’s quarter-million dollar harborfront expansion project has been completed. Every effort was made by Lou and Cyndy Stefan to purchase services and supplies locally and in New York state. The steel piling and stalls, woodwork of New York oak, $10,000 restrooms, facade improvements and complete electrical update are by Joe Moch, General Contractor, of Dunkirk. Thirty years ago — 1993 The Power Shop, located at 202 EastMain St., Fredonia (in the former Pomfret C&E Agway location) recently held its grand opening celebration with a special “sawdust day.” Owner/operator Jon Longenecker welcomed Jonsered factory regional representative Larry Knapp to the event. Pressure washer, chain saw and log splitter demos were held, plus the store offered specials on chainsaw chains and accessories. Thirty years ago — 1993 The Dunkirk Radiator Corp was honored recently at The Resource Center’s Disability Awareness Awards, receiving the award for being Allied Industries Customer of the Year. John Reed, Dunkirk Radiators vice president in charge of operations, accepted the award on behalf of the company. Dunkirk Radiators affiliation with The Resource Center goes back more than 20 years. Thirty years ago — 1993 Another round of employee reductions has beset the Dunkirk industrial community. AL Tech Specialty Steel Corp. announced today they have made “a sizable reduction in the company’s salaried workforce.” Citing a continuing decline in sales because of the foreign import market, the company said the terminations were needed to maintain a proper fiscal balance.
