Thirty years ago — 1993 Fredonia Grange No. 1 recently celebrated its 125th anniversary. Clyde G. Berry, steward of the National Grange, spoke on the founding of the Grange by Oliver Hudson Kelly. Fredonia was the first grange in the country to be organized by Mr. Kelly, a member of President Lincoln’s cabinet. The present Grange building located at 58 West Main St., Fredonia was built in 1915. Thirty years ago — 1993 Back from Rome is Lillian Halasinski, the Dunkirk resident whose medical healing was deemed a miracle by the Vatican. This resulted in the beatification of a Polish nun, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska. She received a blessing and a pearlized rosary from Pope John Paul II. She also was gifted with a medallion commemorating the event and a relic of Blessed Mary Angela from the Felician sisters. Lillian acknowledged “there were doubters. A lot of doubters. Thirty years ago — 1993 A new scholarship program for outstanding freshmen has been established at Fredonia State University College and Carla M. McCutcheon of Ripley is one of its first recipients. The Foundation Freshman Award will provide her with a one-year scholarship equal to full tuition. Thirty years ago — 1993 Janet Seminatore was honored as the Fredonia Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Volunteer of the Year during the annual awards ceremony. The event, held in the fire hall, was attended by more that 70 people. Presenting the award were Dale VanValkenburg and Mac McCoy, Fire Prevention Committee co-chairmen, and Fire Chief Julius Leone. Thirty years ago — 1993 Dr. Elliott J. Schaffer, professor emeritus of speech pathology and audiology at Fredonia State University College recently received a citation from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for being a “Pioneer” in the field. His career spans more than 40 years. Dr. Schaffer set up the Schaffer Family Endowment to provide scholarships for Fredonia speech and hearing students and recently established another endowment to benefit Reed Library at the college.
