Thirty years ago — 1992 The Fredonia Farm Festival Committee has selected former president and general manager of the annual event, James A. McKinley, as grand marshal of this year’s parade, which is a highlight of the 24th four-day celebration. During his years of service to the festival, Mr. McKinley said the expansion from a basic farmer’s market has been the biggest change, noting the rapid growth in attendance and the number of arts and crafts participants. Thirty years ago — 1992 A front page photo shows Rebecca Fairbanks of Fredonia, a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints youth group, trimming shrubbery in Dunkirk’s Washington Park as part of the Adopt the Park service program. About 15-20 members of the youth group started their project under the guidance of park supervisors. Thrity years ago — 1992 The play “Traitor’s Gate” by Jim Fox of Mayville will begin a nine-week run following its world premier at the Burbage Theater in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 21. Mr. Fox is Mayville bureau chief for the OBSERVER and is the author of a number of plays which have been produced in New York and North Carolina. This is his first production in California. Thirty years ago — 1992 The Brocton Volunteer Fire Company recently competed in the annual Southwestern Volunteer Firemen’s Convention parade in Little Valley. Four counties — Alleghany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Erie — were represented. The Brocton Fire Co. marching unit took top honors in the parade by receiving “the grand trophy” for the best overall marching unit. Marching unit chairman Gary Miller said that to the best of his knowledge this is the first time the unit has made top honors since it was started in 1909. Zak, current pastor, the Rev. John Posiewala, Sister Mary Edmundin and the class’ seventh- grade teacher, Sister Mary Antonella.
