Find solutions to the issues

There were not many solutions presented during the recent rally held at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House regarding the educational reforms proposed by state Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

While many points were relevant, such as the increased evaluations being done on teachers and the increased state-mandated tests, no speaker at the March 19 event really offered a plan on how to fix what is wrong. Instead, it was more of a session criticizing state proposals and current practices.

We understand change. We are a 133-year-old business.

But we do appreciate the comments of retired educator and Fredonia Mayor Stephen Keefe, who mentioned the teachers’ union has a role to play in being a part of the equation. After talking about the successes and challenges educators face, he then talked about what needs to happen in moving forward.

“Is this something that we wouldn’t be able to do a lot better without intimidation and more collaboration to achieve higher goals,” he said. “What we need to do is get the governor to work with us, not against us.”

That means having leadership of the New York State United Teachers at least asking for a meeting with Cuomo for its membership. If Cuomo refuses, at least they tried.
