Dunkirk: Shell game over officer
Dunkirk and its schools are working together when it comes to a resource officer.
On Monday, council members approved an agreement to have the officer at the district from August to July 2021. That’s a big step forward — for both parties — and beneficial to our community, its students and employees.
Officers build a communication with all involved — and can help in a number of important troubling issues. Dunkirk schools, unfortunately, will be picking up the tab for the officer of $90,000 per year.
That’s a high number for someone already working on the city force. The school, with 2,000 students is a major part of the 12,000-population city.
We appreciate the two entities working together, but think costs need to be the least of everyone’s worries.
Safety already comes at a high cost in Dunkirk. Why must the city receive revenue from the school for this service?
