DUNKIRK: Holiday wish a bitter note

For the last six months, there has been little or no activity at the once powerful NRG Energy Inc. steam station in Dunkirk on the waterfront. That is due in large part to the company deciding in June against converting the plant from a coal burning to natural-gas electricity provider, which was the plan some five years ago.

It was a decision that stung the community — and still hurts in terms of a loss of jobs and tax revenues.

But don’t us residents worry. NRG still wishes a “Season’s Greetings.” At least that is what the sign near the smoke stacks says.

Somehow, it just does not seem genuine. In this case, actions — abandoning the city and shuttering the plant — come across louder than words of holiday cheer.
