SCHOOLS: Different formulas working in area

It is a great experiment that is being handled delicately by every school district in Western New York. Should students come back to buildings for classes despite the risk of COVID-19?

Apparently, the answer is yes.

Last week, Dunkirk moved forward with allowing children to return to a hybrid schedule starting Monday. “My own personal opinion is as long as you can keep us informed of where our staffing levels are, as long as we can hold staffing levels we can keep the schools safe and we have employees to be able to teach and monitor our children, I would be in favor of opening back up hybrid,” city school board President Dave Damico said.

Other board members echoed his sentiments for the district that serves some 2,000 students. Smaller districts, however, have been fairly consistent since September in keeping classrooms open. They have shown flexibility as well, going remotely if there has been a spike of the virus with staff.

Dunkirk has been at the center of the most recent COVID crisis. Sadly, there have been a number of deaths and illnesses since Christmas.

Those numbers appear to be easing.

School is one of the safer places to be during the pandemic. Face-to-face experiences definitely benefit the student population.
