SILVER CREEK: Small price, major purchase

It is one of the best of all possible outcomes. On Wednesday evening, the Chautauqua County Legislature sold a piece of property in Silver Creek– a longtime eyesore — to Region Nine UAW Housing Corporation of New Brunswick, N.J., for $1.

This has the potential to change a neighborhood — and a community.

For far too long, the old Silver Creek school on Main Street has sat vacant while looking sad. Not only is its appearance a problem, there also is a safety factor due to youth in years past attempting to enter the building.

Several plans through the years have been made to restore the building — and none have gotten past the planning stage.

This effort, however, seems do-able: renovate the building into 47 affordable apartments for people 55 and older. “For longtime residents of the village, watching the former Silver Creek School deteriorate from a proud landmark to an eyesore over these past decades has been sad,” state Sen. George Borrello said in an email. “It has been a longtime goal of mine to see this building renovated and repurposed for the benefit of local residents. I am encouraged that we are now closer than we have ever been to seeing that vision realized, thanks to the joint efforts of officials at the village, county and state levels.”

No question about it. This is a big deal.
