A Dunkirk boxer with a promising future had a setback on Saturday — that had nothing to do with his performance.

In a nationally televised event on Fox Sports 1, there were points not allowed in the match between city native Elon DeJesus and Rajon Chance where DeJesus was in command. In the eyes of the judges — and a questionable decision — DeJesus and Chance ended their bout in a draw.

However, there appeared to be some controversy about how this played out. “Referee Jerry Cantu played a major role, calling for a point deduction from DeJesus’ scorecard in round four without a prior warning and also denying a knockout finish for DeJesus after hurting and subsequently flooring Chance in round five,” Boxing Scene reported online following the bout.

Bad calls are part of every sport. We hope DeJesus’ journey, which started in 2020, continues with some better luck — and officiating.
